KALAMAZOO, Mich. (May 18, 2002) –
The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint Series made their first of two appearances this season at the 3/8 mile high banked Kalamazoo Speedway. The Holt MI veteran Gary Fedewa picked up his fifth feature victory in the last seven shows at Gary Howe’s fine facility.

The near record cold day started with 30 AVSS stars checking in and qualifying at a near record time was current track record holder Bill Tyler of Parma MI with a fast time of 11.074. The surprise of the day was Brownsburg IN driver Jeremy Minton qualifying second quick in his debut in an AVSS car with an 11.169 and third fast was Kevin Feeney at 11.220.

The three ten car heat races were each hard fought and in a brilliant last lap pass Johnboy Hotchkiss took heat one, with Curt Shumaker picking up the second heat and Tom Fedewa capturing the third.

In the 12 lap B-Main it was pole sitter Tyler leading all laps in taking the checkered over Gary Sherman, Jimmy McCune, Rick Baker and Ron Koehler.

The dedicated Kalamazoo fans tried to warm up by cheering on the three wide AVSS salute to the die-hard spectators and then it was time for the 30 lap main event. The field was lead to the green flag by a pair of Hoosier racers Rick Baker and Hank Lower. The first twelve laps were hard fought and the early leader was Lower. The three time champion Gary Fedewa was quickly closing from his sixth starting position and on lap nine he was able to make a very nice pass of Lower and take the lead and eventual victory.

The Holt MI driver thanked Annie Rae Chevrolet, McClures Pub, Pollack Glass and Dowker chassis and engines for helping him get into the Kalamazoo victory lane for the fifth time in the last seven AVSS races ran there. The early leader Lower was able to hold on to runner up position. The remainder of the top ten were Chris Hayes third, Dorman Snyder fourth, Gary Sherman fifth, Baker sixth, Hotchkiss seventh, Mike Ling eighth, Tyler ninth and Suspension Spring Specialist driver of the race Tim Cox tenth from a nineteenth starting position. The Grace award went to Curt Shumaker and the Lane Automotive/Aeroquip/Hamilton Trucking provisional was awarded to Ryan Katz.

A huge thank you to Gary Howe and the entire Kalamazoo Speedway staff for hanging in there and racing on what turned out to be one of the coldest May nights in recent Michigan history. The next event for the AVSS will be the second of three races at the Baer Field Speedway in Fort Wayne IN on Saturday June 1.
