Blonde Slays the Baer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (June 1, 2002) –
The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint Series made their second of three visits to Baer Field Speedway Saturday evening and Litchfield MI racer Jason Blonde picked up his second main event of the young season.

The very warm day started with 32 stars and cars checking in to Tom Isch’s fine ½ mile facility. The qualifying was close and taking quick time was Warsaw IN veteran Denny England with a 15.050. The second quick time went to Hank Lower at 15.176 and Rick Baker was third fast at 15.184.

England, defending national champion Gary Fedewa and Kevin Feeney captured the three hotly contested heat races. The B-Main went to Bill Tyler over Dennis Craft, Tim Cox, David Lawerence and Ron Koehler. The Lane Automotive/Aeroquip/Hamilton Trucking provisional was awarded to Jim Brown, who has started racing his 55 car after several years in retirement.

The feature started in front of the largest Baer Field crowd in many years with the traditional AVSS three wide salute and then it was up to Tom Fedewa and David Lawerence to lead the 21-car field to the start of the feature. The current point leader T.Fedewa was the early leader before a nice pass by third starting Blonde was completed on lap three and Blonde was to hold the lead the final 27 laps. The young racer was not to have it easy as tenth starting England was closing fast and by lap 17 was running second and gaining on the leader Blonde. The final 13 laps very hot and heavy as Blonde and England fought their way through lapped traffic and England actually reached Blonde’s tail tank before the car of Rick Baker was the only thing between Blonde and England. The second place car of England tried to get around Baker and made slight contact with the Baker car hampering his chances of passing Blonde. This is all Blonde needed in taking his second AVSS feature of the year.

The amazing fact was England wasn’t aware of Blonde being the leader and had thought he was the winner. This was not to be as the driver of the Hamilton Trucking, Flint Trucking, Alpha signs car was the winner. The fast qualifier England did an incredible job of saving the car after his contact with Baker and the car was heavily over heating in victory lane. The top ten finishers were Blonde, England, T.Fedewa, Jimmy McCune, Hank Lower, Bill Tyler, Dorman Snyder, Mike Ling, Gary Fedewa and Tim Cox.

The winner of the fifteenth place finishing Grace award was David Lawerence, the Sweet manufacturing steering wheel award went to Blonde and the Suspension Spring Specialist racer of the night was Mike Ling who started 20th and finished 8th.

The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint Series make their debut in the badger state as on Friday June 7 the AVSS visit the Madison International Speedway in Oregon WI. This high-banked half-mile will be witness to world record speeds. The action starts at Madison with the gates opening at 3 and qualifying at 6:30. The AVSS website is available at supersprints.com and please try the discussion forum page as it has been updated and been made much more user friendly.
