Tom Fedewa Flying at Angola

By Mike Strevel

ANGOLA, Ind. (September 1, 2002) –
The Auto Value/Bumper to Bumper Super Sprint series made its annual visit to Angola Motor Speedway Sunday evening and Leslie MI driver Tom Fedewa came out on top.

The hot afternoon started with 31 AVSS teams checking in to the crowded pits and setting fast time was Muncie IN racer Aaron Pierce. The young driver in only his third AVSS race went 12.445. With second quickest it was local favorite Hank Lower of Angola with a 12.493 and Kevin Newton was third at 12.511.

Rick Baker, Bill Tyler and Don Townsend took the three eight lap heat races. Newcomer Steve Irwin took B-main the 12 lap over Gary Fedewa, Dave Durnwald, Jimmy Taylor and Dennis Venia. The amazing thing with Venia s a very scary incident happened in his heat race when a fuel line came loose and his car caught on fire. The fuel covered Venia’s legs and he jumped from the now stopped car in turn four. The fire was quickly put out and after that it was amazing he qualified for the feature. The Lane Automotive/Aeroquip/Hamilton Trucking provisional went to Curt Shumaker.

The 21-car field was ready to start but could not do so until the gigantic Angola crowd witnessed the AVSS three wide salute to the great Hoosier fans. The 30 lap main event was now ready and Kevin Feeney and Tom Fedewa started the field to the green. There was some contact between the two cars and Feeney had his car get very loose and eventually slide to a stop in turn three. When the feature restarted Feeney was sent to the rear and did an incredible job coming all the way back to eighth.

The race restarted with T.Fedewa in the lead and he flew through the field lapping several cars. There was one other caution, but Fedewa was not to be denied in taking his second feature win of the season. The top ten at the stripe were Tom Fedewa, Tim Cox, Newton, Ron Koehler, Lower, Mike Ling, Bill Tyler, Feeney, Baker and Gary Fedewa. The Suspension Spring Specialist driver of the race was Feeney in his amazing recovery.

The AVSS would like to thank Dick Poe, Wes Parrish and all the great Angola associates. The next event on the AVSS calendar is Saturday night September 7 at Auto City Speedway in Flint MI. The AVSS website is www.supersprints.com.
