Jason Blonde Grabs Kalamazoo Win

By Duane Turner

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (May 14, 2004) –
Jason Blonde from Litchfield, MI grabbed his first win of the 2004 AVSS season at Kalamazoo Speedway over a strong field of 25 cars on a very cold May evening. “This is the best handling car I have driven here (Kalamazoo Speedway)”. Stated Blonde from the Kalamazoo Speedway Victory Lane. “It was on a rail. The track came to us perfect. Moe and the crew had this car getting better all night, and it was best when the money was on the line.” Blonde scored victory number one of the 2004 season on board the Marv Carmen owned Dowker Racing Chassis with a Brayton Racing power plant under the hood.

Blonde, and 2003 AVSS Rookie of the Year Brian Lay started the 30-lap event of the front row. At the drop of the green, Blonde quickly took command as he entered turn one on the low side, and getting the bite through the second corner. Lay stayed with Blonde as the leaders came by to complete lap one. Ryan Katz began his charge to the front on lap two by passing Gary Fedewa for third, then one lap later passing Lay on the highside to take the second position. Fedewa would move into the third position on lap five.

As the lead pack seemed to settle into position, they encountered heavy lapped traffic on the eighth circuit. Blonde moved through the traffic with little trouble, as he seemed to pass at will anywhere on the 3/8-mile high-banks. Katz would fall back to 10 car lengths, but the car on the move was Bill Tyler. Tyler started eighth, and on lap nine, had moved into the fourth position. Then passing for third on lap 16 with an outside move on Fedewa. Tyler scored the quickest lap of the race on lap 19 with a time of 11.021, or 122.493 mph while working lapped traffic.

During the late stages of the race, Katz and Tyler would slowly close in on race leader Blonde, but would not gain enough ground to challenge for position. Blonde crossed the line first, with Katz five-car lengths back, and Tyler on the back bumper of Katz. Fedewa came home fourth with a late charge by Dave Baumgartner to round out the top five. Curt Shumaker, Mike Ling, Lay, Troy Underwood, and Jimmy McCune rounded out the top 10.

Bill Tyler scored his first Hamilton Trucking fast time award of 2004 with a lap of 10.983, or 122.917 mph, just missing the track record of 10.928 set by Brian Lay in 2003. The United Trailers Heat Race went to Ryan Katz, while Brian Lay won the Dowker Engines Heat Race. Tim Cox crossed the line first during the Hoosier Racing Tire Heat race. The B-main went to Curt Shumaker. Shane Butler was awarded the Hard Charger award by passing seven cars in route to his 13th place finish.

John Hotchkiss from Charlotte, MI set the Kalamazoo Speedway track record for a two-seated racecar. Hotchkiss, driving the Marv Carmen two seat sprint car, gave one lucky fan a lap of 13.801 around the 3/8-mile oval.
